  1. INTRODUCTION

The 1990’s have seen increasing recognition of the centrality of women’s empowerment to the success of development programmes. The empowerment of women was essential to the declarations and platforms for action of the 1990 World Conference on Education for All, the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the 1993 Human Rights Conference, the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, the 1995 World Summit for Social Development, and the Regional Preparatory Conferences for the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women.  This increased appreciation for and understanding of women’s pivotal role in the development process has also been reflected in the

goals and priorities of organizations and agencies in the United Nations system.  In this regard, the Africa Institute for Capacity Development, South African based training institute has prepared this must attend course whose main aim is to facilitate inter-agency cooperation on gender equality and equity and the empowerment of women, with particular emphasis on operational activities at the country level.

AICD is recognizant of the fact that the empowerment and autonomy of women and the improvement of their political, social, economic and health status is both a highly important end in itself and necessary for the achievement of sustainable human development.

Advancing gender equality and equity and the empowerment of women, and the elimination of all kinds of violence against women and ensuring women’s ability to control their own fertility …are priority objectives of this course.

Furthermore, AICD is cognizant of the fact that in all parts of the world, women are facing threats to their lives, health and well-being.  They receive less education than men and are over-represented among the poor and powerless.  Achieving change requires policy and programme actions that will improve women’s access to the scarce and valued resources of their societies (particularly secure livelihoods and economic resources), alleviate their disproportionate household responsibilities, remove legal and social impediments to their participation in the public sphere, eliminate the spectre of domestic and sexual violence from their daily lives and raise social awareness through effective programmes of education and mass communication. Therefore, we believe this is a must attend course for all gender experts and professionals in Africa and beyond.

Besides, according to the International Conference of the 1990’s, Women’s empowerment is the process in which women expand and recreate what it is that they can be, do, and accomplish in a circumstance that they previously were denied. … There are several principles defining women’s empowerment such as, for one to be empowered, they must come from a position of disempowerment.

Women’s empowerment has five components: women’s sense of self-worth; their right to have and to determine choices; their right to have access to opportunities and resources; their right to have power to control their own lives, both within and outside the home; and their ability to influence the direction of social change to create a more just social and economic order, nationally and internationally.

In this context, education, training, awareness raising, building self-confidence, expansion of choices, increased access to and control over resources, and actions to transform the structures and institutions that reinforce and perpetuate gender discrimination and inequality are important tools for empowering women and girls to claim their rights

2.   TARGETED PARTICIPANTS

  • gender activists
  • human rights
  • women’s human rights

1.     COURSE OVERVIEW

Do you want to understand the challenges and issues related to managing gender equality, diversity and inclusion in organisations, designing interventions and give content to the social responsibility of organisations? During this short course you will learn how to use everyone’s full potential, which has beneficial effects for individuals, organisations and society.

Gender Equality and Social Inclusion are important spheres of academic study and analysis, and also of development and poverty reduction policy. Gender and social relations within and between different groups of people are critical to people’s well-being and to the processes by which people’s well-being changes. They are both critical determinants of people’s ability to influence, participate in and benefit from social, economic and material change, as well as intrinsic to people’s sense of identity.

This module examines Gender Equality and Social Inclusion from both an analytical and a practical perspective. It explores the historical roots of academic and policy interest in these matters and considers why Gender Equality and Social Inclusion matter. It examines different ways of analysing social and gender relations and the relationship between academic and policy work in this field. It then investigates current thinking and concerns relating to the practice of social development and to the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, and it describes tools and frameworks to inform policy-making and practice.

2.     TARGETED GROUP

This module is aimed at students and researchers from the academic world and at development practitioners – from government departments, international development agencies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – who work to promote development and poverty reduction.

In the course, you will learn about the role and function of gender and diversity in the workplace, connecting what happens in organisations to the underlying power processes in politics and society. Besides that, you will gain understanding in how organisations produce different structural inequalities and how these inequalities influence each other in organisational practice. The programme addresses questions about strategy, culture and identity, leadership, and the inclusion of multiple stakeholders in organisational change.

4.     OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE MODULE

The module aims to assist students to understand how social relations, and particularly gender relations, affect people; how they can be analysed; and how they have influenced development policy and practices and the outcomes of development interventions. The module also aims to assist students to develop their practical skills in addressing Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in analysis and in policy design and implementation.
