  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

A comprehensive examination of the public safety and law enforcement functions of government in a modern society.

Considered are the evolution, history, and philosophy of the law enforcement function; the role of the police in a democratic and pluralistic society; police accountability, corruption and deviance; police operational principles and practices; and current problems confronting the police in their relationship to the community they serve

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the public safety and law enforcement functions of government
  2. Recognize the problems of law enforcement in society
  3. Identify the methods currently used to deal with the problems of police and correctional officer accountability, corruption and deviance
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of public safety in both the public and private sector
